SCRIPTURE: Psalm 1:1-6 (ESV)

1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. 4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; 6 for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
OBSERVATIONS: In this Psalm the writer contrasts the way of the righteous man and the wicked man. The righteous man doesn't do the things that wicked men do. He doesn't take part in their plans, nor seek their counsel. Instead, he looks to the Lord for direction in his life. As a result the righteous man is pictured as a tree planted by the river. His roots go deep, and his branches spread high and wide. He is fruitful, and all he does prospers. In contrast the wicked man is blown around by every whim of the wind. He has no where to stand, and so will not stand in the day of judgement.
APPLICATION: Be like the righteous man, and not the wicked man. Don't run off after the things of the world. Instead, find your peace and contentment in the Lord. If you do, God will prosper your soul. What ever you do in following him will flourish.
PRAYER: Dear Lord: Please help me to seek your counsel, and your wisdom in all that I do. Help me to find my comfort and peace in you. Please provide for us in this time of rest and restoration. Please show us what your next steps are for us. Please give us the courage to take those steps. In Jesus' name, Amen.
